BISMARCK - The Dickinson High gymnastics team struggled on the balance beam yet again on Friday.

Only freshman Ayanna Fossum remained on the beam throughout her routine, and the Midgets suffered the consequences, slipping into a tie with Jamestown for second place with 141.625 points at a meet in Bismarck. Bismarck High led the way with 144.600 points.

“We are in a serious struggling mode,” Dickinson head coach Kent Van Ells said of the beam. “It’s very frustrating, but we’ll keep working on it.”

Fossum placed second on the beam with 9.325 points, and she was second in the all-around with 37.450 points. She was first on the floor (9.650), second on the bars (9.175) and third on the vault (9.300).

Bismarck High’s Julia Redwing won the bars and vault and was second on the floor, helping her to first place in the all-around with 37.675 points.

“Ayanna had a good day, good meet. The girl that beat her in the all-around, they’re pretty on par with each other,” Van Ells said. “But she’s a good gymnast.”

Faith Beck was 11th in the all-around for Dickinson.

The meet served as a measuring stick of sorts, Van Ells said, as Valley City finished fourth overall with 140.000 points. The top four teams at the meet, he estimated, are likely the best four in the state.

“Bismarck is definitely going to be the team to beat,” he said. “Rachel (Dillman) did not compete at the beginning of the season, and she got third (in the all-around) here with most of the good teams in the state here. They’re going to be really tough to beat.”
