Midgets in fifth after first day of state tournament

WAHPETON -- The Dickinson girls golf team has been toward the top of the standings, yet still far out of contention for the win, in tournaments all year.

WAHPETON -- The Dickinson girls golf team has been toward the top of the standings, yet still far out of contention for the win, in tournaments all year.

That didn't change Monday at the Class A state tournament, held along the Red River at the cold and wet Bois de Sioux Golf Course.

The Midgets finished the first day of the two-day tournament in fifth place with a 361, 31 strokes off Minot High's lead.

The West Region champions shot a 325 to hold a six-shot advantage on East Region champion Fargo Shanley.

Jamestown junior Laura Kraft jumped out to a four-stroke lead in the individual race.

The defending state champion shot a 71 while Shanley's Liz Strom opened up with a 75 and Minot's McKenzie Nagel shot a 77. Minot had four golfers finish in the top 10 for the day.

Jenna Wellenstein led Dickinson with an 86. She is in 13th place and just two shots outside of the top 10. Rachael Jahner had a 91 while Lexi Erickson and Morgan Kathrein each shot a 92 for the Midgets. Riana Cooper had a 97 and Steph Wallace carded a 98.

"I think we did OK. There's some things we can try and fix a little bit," Dickinson coach Olivia Wellenstein said. "Some of our downfall today was really chipping and putting, to get used to that cold air and making sure you get the ball to where you want it to go."

The final round of the tournament is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Central Time today. The forecast calls for rain throughout the day and a high of 45 degrees.

Olivia Wellenstein said if the rain is too heavy and course officials believe the tournament may do extensive damage to the course, they could cancel the second day.

"We'll go out there and see," she said.
