Midgets qualifying efforts come up short

MANDAN -- Three players from the Dickinson High girls golf team took to the Prairie West Golf Course and participated in the Mandan Invitational on Tuesday, Sept. 18.

MANDAN - Three players from the Dickinson High girls golf team took to the Prairie West Golf Course and participated in the Mandan Invitational on Tuesday, Sept. 18.

Leading the way for the Midgets was freshman Lola Homiston, who shot a score of 99. Junior Shelby Steier and Hazel Emter followed after completing the round with marks of 106 and 117, respectively.

The event was an individual state qualifier, with players shooting 90 or below earning a spot at the Class A girls state golf tournament beginning on Oct. 1 in Jamestown.

Eighteen golfers punched their state ticket, lead by Bismarck Century eighth-grader Leah Herbel, who defeated Bismarck St. Mary’s junior Abby Schmidt in a playoff after the two finished 18 holes with a 75.

The Patriots collected the team victory with an overall score of 330, 10 shots ahead of the runner-up Saints.
