Midgets take fifth at Coyote Invitational

WILLISTON -- Hours removed from competing in a dual at home against Jamestown, the Dickinson High boys swim and dive team traveled to Williston to take part in the Coyotes Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 5, from the Sea Lions Swim Club.

With a score of 290 points, the Midgets finished fifth as Minot, the defending state champions, were first with a mark of 738 points. The Blue Jays were second, while Williston and Bismarck Legacy were tied for third.

Dickinson’s standout was Dawson Wilson. The freshman finished first in the 1-meter dive, picking up the victory with a score of 387.45, more than 40 points ahead of runner-up senior Gage Poland, of Jamestown. Wilson followed his diving performance with a 12th-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke, seven spots behind senior co-captain Isaac Ellerkamp, who completed the event in 1 minute, 9.33 seconds.

The duo teamed with sophomore co-captain Taven Wilson and freshman Mason Beck in the 200-yard medley relay, earning fifth after clocking in a 1:57.48. The foursome were responsible for seven of the team’s nine top-10 individual finishes.

Dickinson’s best relay finish came in the 200 freestyle relay, where Taven Wilson, Beck, Ellerkamp and freshman Trent Irwin took third with a time of 1:42.99.
