Midgets take sixth at Sidney Eagle Invite, Bulldogs 11th

SIDNEY, Mont. - Two weeks after its season-opening home meet was cancelled due to weather, the Dickinson High wrestling team finally hit the mat for the first time on Friday, Nov. 30, and Saturday, Dec. 1, at the Sidney Eagle Invitational in Sidney, Mont.

Competing against more than 20 teams from North Dakota, Montana and Idaho, the Midgets captured sixth place overall with a team score of 103 points. Another area team that had a solid showing was Bowman County, who finished 11th with 67 points.

Post Falls (Idaho) won the invitational after posting 238.5 points, while host Sidney earned the runner-up spot with 194.5 points.

Seven Midgets placed, highlighted by freshmen Troy Berg. Wrestling out of the 132-pound weight class, Berg received a first-round bye before collecting three victories. In the finals, Berg fell to Post Falls junior A.J. Delarosa in a tiebreaker 7-4. Senior Joshua Johnson grappled well, taking fourth out of the 120-pound division. After dropping a quarterfinal match to Post Falls sophomore Lane Reardon, Johnson won three matches in the consolation bracket before losing to Reardon in the 3rd-place match.

Eighth-grade 113-pounder Henry Nelson and 145-pound senior Mathew Meschke each earned fifth-place finishes. Battling out of the 132-pound division, senior Jaren Berger took home sixth place while fellow seniors Brendan Johnson and Tate Nordby were seventh at the 120- and 160-pounds, respectively.

Three wrestlers placed for the Bulldogs, led by senior heavyweight Beau Jeffers. After wins in the first two rounds, Jeffers was defeated by Dawson County senior Keegan Mires. Jeffers bounced back with four straight victory, closing with a 2-0 decision over senior Terran Sharbrough in the third-place match.

Seniors Clayton Mattern and Jacob Ruggles capped the Bulldog placers. Mattern took fourth in the 182-pound division while Ruggles fell to Nordby in the 160-pound seventh-place match.
