BISMARCK - Dickinson High’s three singles players all suffered a loss on Friday on the first day of individual state qualifying competition at the West Region tournament, but Ireland Jung, Sarah Nelson and Katie Riely will have a chance to atone for their misstep today.
Jung will face the winner that emerges from Nelson and Riely’s match this morning; the winner of that match will then qualify for state.
Jung and Nelson, both seniors, started Friday with wins.
Jung dispatched Mandan’s Zacha McKenzie 6-1, 6-2, and Nelson topped Jamestown’s Medora Pringle 6-4, 6-3. Lauryn Andre of Bismarck High then defeated Jung 6-2, 6-0, and Bismarck Century’s Jamie Stoppler defeated Nelson by the same score.
Riely lost her first match 6-1, 6-2 to Emily Tweten of Mandan, but she stayed alive with wins over Minot’s Joelle Fettig and Taylor Mattson. Nelson also picked up a consolation bracket win over Bismarck Legacy’s Hannah Felt.
On the doubles side, Dickinson’s Lauren Jorda and Dynae Zubke started Friday by defeating Bismarck Legacy’s Sierra Knoll and Camaryn Beasley in straight sets, dropping just one game in the process. The Dickinson duo was sent to the consolation side of the bracket after a 6-4, 6-2 loss to Century’s Anne Dickson and Carla Maurstad. Today, if Zubke and Jorda defeat Bismarck’s Taylor Richter and Sydney Helgeson, they’ll qualify for the state tournament.
Dickinson’s other doubles pairing, Cora Knipp and Jaida Harden lost both matches played on Friday, eliminating them from contention.
