Mitzel, Skyhawks end Beach’s playoff run

BISMARCK -- While the first quarter of the 9-man quarterfinal game between Beach and Shiloh Christian started slow, the Skyhawks quickly took over, defeating the Buccaneers 49-26 on Saturday, Oct. 28.

BISMARCK - While the first quarter of the 9-man quarterfinal game between Beach and Shiloh Christian started slow, the Skyhawks quickly took over, defeating the Buccaneers 49-26 on Saturday, Oct. 28.

The Skyhawks were led by sophomore quarterback Jaden Mitzel who threw four touchdown passes and ended the day with 207 yards in the air.

Bartholomew Ogbu caught a 2-yard touchdown pass from Mitzel with three minutes remaining in the first quarter to start the scoring.

All the touchdowns in the second quarter were scored on the ground. Junior Canaan Fagerland and Mike Kuehn scored for Shiloh Christian with rushes of 6 and 10 yards, respectively.

Junior running back Clay Mattern rushed 9 yards to put the Buccaneers on the board. Mattern rushed 127 yards over 19 carries.

The Skyhawks led 22-6 at half.

Beach senior quarterback Josiah Orluck started the third quarter with an 11-yard rush to score.

The Skyhawks answered with three touchdowns. Ogbu, Trey Brunelle and Fagerland caught passes from Mitzel of 54, 63 and 23 yards.

The Skyhawks added one more in the final frame and the Buccaneers scored twice, but the deficit was too big to overcome.
