LOS ANGELES - Minnesota’s Renee Montgomery hit a 3-pointer with two seconds to play, lifting the Lynx to a 72-69 victory over the host Los Angeles Sparks in a battle of two undefeated powers Tuesday afternoon at Staples Center.
Both teams have been dominant en route to setting WNBA records for the most consecutive wins to start the season as Minnesota improved to 13-0. They had each outscored opponents by more than 13 points per game, but they found themselves in a tight contest on Tuesday.
Minnesota’s Sylvia Fowles scored an inside basket that tied the score 69-69 with 28 seconds to play, followed by Montgomery’s decisive 3-pointer.
Kristi Toliver finished with a game-high 20 points for the Sparks (11-1).
The game was tied at 56-56 heading into the fourth quarter. Toliver hit a 3-pointer to put the Sparks ahead 69-67 with 2:11 to play.
Montgomery, a reserve forward, finished with six points on two 3-pointers.
Lynx star Maya Moore suffered a left thigh injury in the second half and did return. Moore finished with eight points. Seimone Augustus led Minnesota with 13 points, and Rebekkah Brunson finished with 12 points.
In a back-and-forth first half, the Lynx led by seven midway through the second quarter. But the Sparks closed the half with an 11-3 run and took a 39-38 lead.
The two teams met in the playoffs last season, with Lynx winning the series and going on to capture the WNBA title.
The squads meet again Friday in Minnesota.
