The Class B girls triple jump championship may run through the Southwest Region.
Hettinger-Scranton sophomore Cassie Holt improved on her class-leading mark in the event Tuesday with a winning leap of 36 feet, 3 inches during the Richardton-Taylor Raider Booster Club Invitational at the Badlands Activities Center.
That was more than a foot better than her previous high of 35-1¾ and kept Mott-Regent sophomore Abby Honeyman off her tail. Honeyman's runner-up jump of 35 feet now ranks third in Class B behind Holt's top two marks.
"My goal is just to peak at the end of the season and that's what I'm doing," Holt said. "I knew I could get there. I wasn't really expecting to, but I knew I could if I kept it up."
With less than two weeks remaining before the Southwest Region meet, athletes are beginning to show their end-of-season form.

On a mild day where wind was a factor at times, several runners finished just hundredths of a second short of their previous season-best times. That included sprinters Lewis Keller of Killdeer and Michael Palczewski of Bowman County.
Keller, a senior, won the 100 meters in 11.26 seconds. He beat Palczewski, whose runner-up finish of 11.3 seconds qualified him for state in the event. Palczewski, a junior, won the 200 in 23.08.
Both sprinters fell just short of surpassing their season bests in the events they won.
Palczewski said qualifying in the 100 was nice, but not something he was planning.
"I just wanted to see if I could do it," he said with a laugh. "I probably won't run it at state because we want to focus on some of our relays."
Killdeer senior Nick Klatt improved by a half-inch in the shot put, winning with a toss of 49-10½.
The Cowboys won the boys meet, edging Hazen 77 to 74.
Hazen's Tyler Parker had a throw of 174-5 in the javelin, moving him to No. 2 in Class B. Beulah eighth-grader Casey Walker won and qualified for state in the triple jump at 41-7.

Beach junior Danny Skoglund came up just short of his season-best time in the 300 hurdles, winning in 41.47 seconds.
However, he added another event to his state meet itinerary, qualifying in the 800 meters despite placing fifth with a time of 2:03.23.
"That's my first time running it this year so I just went all out and tried to qualify," Skoglund said. "I'm pretty proud."
He was pulled along by four Dickinson High runners.
Mike Porter won the 800 in 2:00.57 and Dallas Zastoupil was second in 2:01.59, who both qualified for state. Joseph Sickler (2:01.99) and Vlad Kutka (2:03.05) were third and fourth, respectively.
The Class A and B standards for the boys 800 are different.
Bowman County senior Erika Olson, one of the state's top-ranked girls sprinters, ran a 12.93-second time to beat her rival, Mott-Regent junior Marah Friez, by one-tenth of a second in the 100 meters.
She then took a shot at the 800 meters, finishing first in 2:28.81 but falling 2.57 seconds short of qualifying for state.

The Bulldogs rested all of their relays except the 400 team.
Mott-Regent and Bowman County each improved their times in the event.
The Wildfire won in 51.63 seconds and the Bulldogs came in second at 52.65. Mott-Regent, which edged Hazen 82.5 to 80 for the team win, also won the 800 relay with an improved time of 1:47.99.
Mott-Regent sophomore Abby Honeyman and Hazen freshman Dakota Wood both made big strides in the 100 hurdles.
Honeyman's winning time of 15.74 seconds pulled her closer to the Class B-best time of 15.64 held by Langdon senior McKenzie Hart. Wood finished second with a season-best time of 16.16 seconds in the 100 hurdles and won the 300 hurdles in 47.43.
Dickinson Trinity turned to Andrea Jirges to help its girls qualify in two relay events.
The Titans qualified their 800 relay (1:51.28) and 3,200 relay (10:13.78) teams with the help of their speedy senior.
Sophomore Katelyn Grinsteinner, the 3,200 relay anchor, said it was a relief to qualify for state. The team had just missed qualifying in the event at several meets.

"We were getting really frustrated, getting so close to qualifying it but not getting quite there," Grinsteinner said. "Today we all came together and we decided to crack down and just get this thing into state."
Elsewhere, Dickinson junior Ali Moody took a shot at qualifying for state in the long jump and high jump. She won both events but didn't qualify. She went 16-3 in the long jump and topped out at 4-11 in the high jump.
Killdeer senior Taylor Boster won both the discus (127-0) and shot put (37-8) with state-qualifying throws, though neither was her best effort of the season. She has the best discus throw in Class B at 130-7.
