SAN FRANCISCO - Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton added NFL Most Valuable Player to his expansive trophy case at the NFL Honors on Saturday night at Bill Graham Civic Auditorium.
It was a clean sweep for the Panthers, with Carolina’s Ron Rivera named NFL Coach of the Year.
On the eve of Super Bowl 50, where Newton and the Panthers (17-1) will bid for the first Lombardi Trophy in franchise history, Carolina claimed multiple top honors.
Newton was also named Offensive Player of the Year.
Newton, who had 50 total touchdowns including the playoffs, won the Heisman Trophy and national championship in his final college season at Auburn. He led the Panthers to a 15-1 record in the regular season and scored 45 touchdowns in the regular season.
J.J. Watt, the All-Pro defensive end for the Houston Texans, was named Defensive Player of the Year.
Kansas City Chiefs safety Eric Berry, who missed last season to undergo treatment for cancer, was named Comeback Player of the Year.
Wide receiver Anquan Boldin of the hometown San Francisco 49ers won the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award.
The rookie of the year awards went to a pair of first-round picks who had tough final seasons in college - St. Louis Rams running back Todd Gurley and Chiefs cornerback Marcus Peters.
