BOWMAN - Of all the participants at the Southwest Region track meet, no one played a larger role in the results than the weather.
Downpour drenched the Bowman High School track, making a poncho the most popular look of the day. Near-freezing temperatures forced participants and attendees to don thick layers, which were soon weighed down by the relentless rain.
Despite a brief meeting in the afternoon debating the fate of the regional meet, the action continued. With the most athletes pushing through and doing well in the wet weather, the Bowman County boys and the Beulah girls earned victories on Friday, May 17.
The Miners collected 117 points, just six ahead of Mott-Regent-New England with 111. The Bulldog boys won with 194 points, nearly 100 more than second-place Beulah with 99.
"All strategy gets thrown out the window," Bowman County head coach Jonathan Jahner said. "You come in with a plan and conditions get this bad and it becomes a safety issue for athletes. Sprinters, jumpers especially, it's really cold, it's really tough on muscles. Our mid-distance, distance group, we're gonna try to make a workout out of the day. It's really sad that our region meet has to be a workout, but it is what it is."

The workout day worked out well for the Bulldog boys, as they won six events. Brian Miller won the 800 and the mile, qualifying for state by way of a top-three finish. Junior Jacob Svihovec won both the long jump and javelin, while senior Brian Anaya was the winner at triple jump and junior Moritz Melzer won discus.
The Miners women persisted, winning four events, two by Tia Horning, who won both the long jump and 100-meter hurdles.
Jahner was named Coach of the Year for both boys and girls, while Kaden Kuntz of Dickinson Trinity and Shawnee Hansen of Killdeer won Senior Athletes of the Year.
Uncommon champions
Dickinson Trinity, typically a strong contender for the championships, decided to pull most of its top athletes who had already qualified to avoid injury. A few other teams did the same, changing the field entirely. Without some of the regions best performing, events crowned uncommon champions who benefited from the unideal circumstances.
"This is not about team points, this is about getting kids to the state meet and getting kids to compete," Jahner said. "That's why we're out here, rain or shine."
The Richardton-Taylor girls won the 4x200 and placed third in the 4x100, earning a spot at the state meet they otherwise may not have earned. The Raiders further reaped the benefits, with sophomore Skylar Crow taking first in the 100-meter dash and junior Owen Voigt crossing the line first in the 400.
The Beach girls 4x800 relay took third to secure a spot at state, while the Buccaneer boys also qualified in the 4x200, thanks to the efforts of Jared Wojahn, Riley Frieze, Chance Manhart and Samuel Clarke. The same four took second in the 4x400 to qualify for state.

"There's been a lot of dropped handoffs," Wojahn said. "That's kind of the key to our success. We kind of told ourselves, 'We should not drop the handoff and we have a chance of getting a place and going to state.' So, we kept the handoffs in the 4x200 really solid and we were able to take first and have an upset."
Wojahn also finished third in the 100 with a time of 11.6 seconds, earning a place at state. Manhart will also compete at state after finishing third in the 800 and Molly Farstveet took second in the shot put to qualify.
Among the dozens of upsets and surprises, a few things remained constant:
like Bre Tessier and Isaac Fridrich. The Dickinson Trinity seniors have been winning girls javelin and boys shot put all season and kept that going at regionals. Senior Macy Gress also triumphed in the 800 with a time of 2:34.36.
The Titans finished third among boys team, and fourth among the girls.
Another constant was Mott-Regent-New England junior Morgan Hertz. As she often does, Hertz won the 300-meter hurdles with a fall-free time of 50.6 seconds. Some others stumbled in both hurdle events due to the slick track. Hertz also won the 200-meter dash.
Mott-Regent-New England decided not to pull any athletes and do what they could with the weather. They boys ended up taking fourth with 76 points.
"You have to have the conversation with your upper-end athletes, 'Do you feel comfortable doing this?' and all our kids are gutsy enough and they were," Mott-Regent-New England head coach Nate Zachmann said. "Morgan, in her race, she took it slow out of the blocks and kind of slowly built and I think that was a good race for her."
