MANDAN -- Dickinson High coach Pete Dobitz was relieved his baseball team clinched its spot in the Class A state tournament Friday.

On Saturday, the West Region Tournament championship gane between the Midgets and Bismarck High was rained out at Veteran's Memorial Ballpark.

"We're kind of playing our best baseball right now," Dobitz said. "We feel like we got cheated. We really had a chance to accomplish something I don't think we've ever done before with back-to-back WDA championships."

Because Dickinson (13-9) entered the tournament as the No. 4 seed and Bismarck came in as the No. 2, the Midgets will be the West's No. 2 seed while the Demons claim the top seed.

Dickinson will play East Region No. 3 seed Fargo Davies at approximately 1 p.m. MDT Thursday at Jack Brown Stadium in Jamestown.

"A lot of people say, 'The regular season doesn't mean anything,'" Dobitz said. "Well, there are times when it does matter."

Dickinson is very familiar with Davies. The two teams met in the first round of last year's state tourney with Davies coming out on top. Dickinson went on to place fifth in the state.

"The boys are already talking about being up for the challenge," Dobitz said. "The boys are excited to get even, I guess."

James Kary and Alex Huschka were named to the West Region all-tournament team. Dobitz feels his seniors are deserving of the honor.

"(It's) two seniors, good leadership, and a good way to show the young guys how to play the game when your backs are against the wall and the game's on the line," Dobitz said.
