Rohr signs with Mystics

The volleyball pipeline from Dickinson High to Bismarck State College isn’t slowing down.
On Monday, Dickinson High senior Sierra Rohr signed to play volleyball for the Mystics beginning in the fall of 2014.
“It’s a really nice factor that Bismarck is close to Dickinson,” Rohr said. “I have a lot of family in Bismarck too. They are excited to come and watch me too.”
The 5-foot-11 middle hitter is the fourth player in the third consecutive class of Dickinson High players to play at BSC. Two years ago, Madison Deibert and Leslie Beaudoin signed with the Mystics and Rachel Schroeder received quality playing time as a freshman at BSC this season.
“I figured it would be a good spot for me to play college volleyball,” said Rohr, who will major in elementary education and early childhood education at BSC. “I’m excited to play with Rachel again. It was really fun to play with her in high school and I can’t wait to play with her in college.”
When the season began, Rohr didn’t know if she wanted to play college volleyball. But toward the middle of the season, Rohr decided she wanted to continue her volleyball career.
BSC, however, wasn’t on the map until head coach Jeni Walsh sent her an email. Rohr said she visited with a couple colleges, but the decision was easy to make after Walsh sent her an email.
“I thought about a few schools,” Rohr said. “When coach Walsh emailed me, I took a tour there and I really liked it. I’m excited that I get to go to school at BSC.”
Dickinson head coach Jay Schobinger said Rohr does a great job of adjusting throughout a match, which should bode well at the collegiate level.
“Her biggest asset is that she makes a great adjustment as a middle hitter on any set,” Schobinger said. “She can get involved offensively as a middle without the perfect pass. She does a great job of hitting around blockers. I think it is a good fit for her.”
This past season the Mystics won the National Junior College Athletic Association Region 13 title. Over the past couple of years, BSC has consistently been a competitive team.
Schobinger said with the Mystics continuing to be a quality team year-in and year-out, it has attracted attention of high-level in-state recruits.
“All it takes is one or two kids to go there,” he said. “Coach Walsh has done a great job of recruiting local kids and done a great job of being competitive. Kids want to go and play at school that they can be competitive.”
