MINOT - The Dickinson High gymnastics team couldn’t knock off the hometown team.
Minot collected its fourth state championship in seven years.
The Majettes scored a season-best 149.967, while Dickinson took runner-up 146.883 during the team competition of the North Dakota state gymnastics meet on Friday.
“We weren’t going to get 150, which is what it was going to take come out ahead on this one,” Dickinson head coach Kent Van Ells said. “We had a good meet. I felt pretty good about it. We scored real well. We had a lot of good individual performances. It was a good day. I wasn’t disappointed at all.”
As a team, Minot placed first in all four events - vault, floor exercise, balance beam and uneven bars. Dickinson grabbed runner-up in those four events. The 146.883 was the Midgets’ third-best score of the season.
Though the all-around scores don’t count toward the individual part of the meet, Dickinson grabbed three of the five top spots.
Dickinson junior Acacia Fossum finished runner-up. She won the beam and floor with scores of 9.717 and 9.767, respectively. Fossum ended runner-up in 9.7 and tied for fourth in the vault (9.133).
The Midgets also had Ayanna Fossum and Keana Kudrna grab the Nos. 4 and 5 spots in the all-around. Kudrna won bars (9.467), while Ayanna Fossum placed fourth in the floor (9.533) and beam (9.4).
Minot’s Madison Reiter placed first in the all-around with a 38.567. The Minot senior took first in the vault wiht a 9.783 and runner-up on bars (9.4), beam (9.650) and floor (9.733).
The individual day for the state meet begins at 1 p.m. today.
“It has a different dynamic, because they are spread around the gym,” Van Ells said. “It’s really an individual competition. They cheer on each other as best as they can, but some of them are about to compete on bars and their teammates could be competing on beam. They have to be self-motivating.”
