Roughriders triumph over Cougars

WASHBURN -- Southern McLean capitalized on Heart River's mistakes in the second quarter, scoring 12 points and propelling them to an 18-13 win on Friday.

WASHBURN - Southern McLean capitalized on Heart River’s mistakes in the second quarter, scoring 12 points and propelling them to an 18-13 win on Friday.

After a scoreless first quarter, senior Nolan Teigen recovered a fumble and returned it 26 yards for the opening touchdown of the Region 4 matchup. Less than three minutes later, junior Tate Bertolotto ran 71 yards on a punt return to put the home team up 12-0 at the half.

The Roughriders added one more in the third quarter with a 66-yard rush by sophomore Logan Schmitz.

Schmitz led Southern McLean with 142 rushing yards over 16 carries, followed by Bertolotto who earned 31 rushing yards.

The Cougars started their comeback attempt in the final frame, starting with a 25-yard pass from junior quarterback Cauy Shypkoski to senior wide receiver Logan McMahen. A kick by Anton Krebs brought the Cougars within 11 points of the home team.


With just over two minutes to play, Shypkoski ran 11 yards for the final touchdown of the game.

He led Heart River with 114 rushing yards over 20 carries and added 135 yards in the air.

Southern McLean is now 2-6 overall and 2-5 in the region. Heart River falls to 1-7 overall and 1-6 in region play.
