BOWMAN -- The Schaper twins had a great start to the North Dakota High School Rodeo Association State Finals.

Skye Schaper and Logan Schaper, twins and recent Killdeer High School graduates, won a combined three events in the first round and placed high in two more Friday during the first of two long rounds at Dakota Winds Arena.

"It means a lot to us because we've all put a lot of hard work into it," Skye Schaper said.

Skye Schaper started out her day with the winning time of 8.11 seconds in the goat tying during the morning performance and won the breakaway roping during the evening performance with a time of 3.7 seconds. She was also third in the pole bending at 21.072 seconds.

Her brother Logan Schaper won the tie-down roping with a time of 12.86 and teamed up with classmate Tate Harris to place second in the team roping in 12.065 seconds.

Dunn Center's Jake Benson and Belfield's Devin Boltz tied for the first-round win the bull riding with a 70.

Killdeer's Wyatt Bice made a move to stay in second place in the saddle bronc riding season standings with a 71 to win the first round. Richardton's Dalton Rixen has the season title wrapped up but didn't hold on for a qualified ride Friday.

Bismarck's Justice Johnson and Mandan's Logan Berg all but sealed state championships of their own with wins in the steer wrestling and bareback riding, respectively.

Johnson had a quick turn of 6.65 seconds. Berg had a 61, the lone qualified ride of the first round.

Kindred's Ryan Thompson and Riley Rustad won the team roping in 10.51 seconds.

Chase Lako of Arthur made a push toward defending his boys all-around title by winning the boys cow cutting (147), taking third in the steer wrestling (10.01) and eighth in the tie-down roping (17.28). He entered the day seven points behind Colt Roshau in the standings.

Roshau, however, got the last laugh in the cow cutting, beating Lako by two season standings points (143 to 141) to win the championship in the event. The Bismarck cowboy was second in the event Friday.
