FOREST CITY, Iowa - After dropping its first game 6-4 to host Waldorf University on Saturday, March 23 at Al Buckley Field, the Dickinson State softball team came back to win the remaining three games of the weekend. The weekend kicked off conference play for both teams. With a 3-1 North Star record, the Blue Hawks sit in third.

The Blue Hawks bounced back right away, using a grand slam from Kayla Stephens to win 13-1 in five innings. Later, Dickinson State tallied 13 runs again in the nightcap, but won by a single run over the Warriors.

A six-run seventh inning helped the visitors come from behind to win. Following a single from sophomore pitcher Jaya Allen and a base on balls by Abi Brooks, Stephens doubled to score a run, cutting the Warrior advantage to 12-8.

After another walk and the first out of the inning, freshman Rhea Paiva tripled to drive in three runs. Senior Andrea Rodriguez plated the tying run on a double and stole third before dashing home on a sacrifice fly from senior Sonja Lawrence.

On Sunday, the Blue Hawks (13-10, 3-1 NSAA) were dominant again, using an early 7-1 lead to win 11-5 over Waldorf (4-14, 1-3 NSAA).

Senior catcher Claire Shoffit singled to score Rodriguez to go up 1-0 in the first. Allen, DSU’s starting pitcher, homered an 0-1 pitch to put the Blue Hawks up 3-0.

In the second, Lawrence singled to plate a run, before scoring on a Shoffit double. Once again, Allen brought Shoffit home, reaching on an error. She too crossed home plate when fellow pitcher Abi Brooks singled on a ground ball to center.

Shoffit, Stephens, Mesi, Brooks and Allen all hit home runs for the Blue Hawks. Shoffit, who was named NSAA player-of-the-week, went 9-for-12 on the weekend, with four doubles, and nine RBIs.
