Junior Shelley Kathrein had two wardrobe changes during her track meet Tuesday.

When she started the day high jumping, she donned a New England jersey with an orange tiger on it. Later, for the 4x100 meter relay, she wore a red and yellow Wildfire jersey, and to conclude the meet, Kathrein and her fellow 4x400 runners were back to bearing the Tigers logo.

With the new co-op between Mott-Regent and New England, constant uniform changes may be one of the only downfalls. The biggest upside, is having more numbers, meaning the team is more competitive.

With help from Kathrein, the Lady Wild Tigers combined to finish second among Class B schools in the Dickinson High Pankratz meet Tuesday, April 23, at the Biesiot Activities Center.

"First off, the co-op is all about the kids and competing at the highest level possible," Mott-Regent-New England head coach Nate Zachmann said. "They're starting to see what can happen. Their relays are more competitive, just competing overall for overall points at track meets, we just love it. ... The uniforms ... hopefully we have a new set coming in for May that says MRNE on it."

The Dickinson Trinity girls were the highest Class B placer, finishing fifth with 78 points, while the Wild Tigers earned 64 points and Bowman County earned seventh with 46. Richardton-Taylor, Hazen and Hettinger-Scranton rounded out the standings.

Kathrein didn't crack the top 10 in long jump or high jump, but she played a key role in two relays. In the 4x100, she ran the final leg, helping her team finish with a time of 54.07 seconds, while the Midgets took third with a time of 54 seconds. The Wild Tigers likely could have bested them if the final hand off had gone more smoothly.

"We are way better this year (with the co-op)," Kathrein said. "We have more options to choose from for people, so we choose the fastest people from each team and we do better."

In the 4x400, Kathrein was the second leg, with Angel Erickson, Hannah Frank and Lindsay Koch joining her to place sixth.

Junior Morgan Hertz picked up points for the squad in the 300-meter hurdles, running a state-qualifying time of 47.83 seconds. As a sophomore, she finished third at state with a 47 flat.

Edging out a girl in the final second, Hertz also placed third in the 200, earning a personal-best time of 28.31 seconds.

"With Morgan's finish last year, and her first three races this year, she's been a bit disappointed," Zachmann said. "I told her just to relax, don't overthink it, just relax. We were taping her ankle this morning and I walked away and said, 'you're going to run a 47.' ... I think once that pressure goes off her shoulders a bit, you run a better race."

The Wild Tigers boys were led by senior Cody Perkins, who earned second in the 110-meter hurdles with a state-qualifying time of 16 seconds. In high jump, junior Logan Wolf placed second, clearing 5 feet,10 inches. In the discus, sophomore Sam Huether hit a personal-best of 130-04, good for third.

Mott-Regent-New England earned fifth on the boys side with 74 points, 24 behind the reigning southwest region champion Titans, who took fourth overall.

Bowman County finished second with 112.5 points, while Dickinson High won with 164.

The Bowman County girls were farther behind in seventh with 46 points.

Leading the Bulldogs boys were junior Jacob Svihovec and senior Corban Massey. Svihovec finished first in the triple jump with a distance of 44-00.5. Meanwhile, Massey won the 300-meter hurdles, defeating second-place finisher, Wild Tiger Jaxon Hewson, by more than two seconds.

"I felt like I got out good," Massey said. "I was strong on the corner, I just need to get in better shape so I can finish strong."

Massey also finished fourth in the pole vault, clearing a personal-best 11 feet, while taking seventh in the 200, stopping the clock at 25.07.

Richardton-Taylor junior Katya Baranko won the high jump with a leap of 4-11, while sophomore Skyler Crow qualified for state in long jump with a measurement of 17-08.

Alyssa Andress, a senior out of Hettinger-Scranton finished seventh in both the long and triple jumps, while Night Hawks senior Ty Lachowitzer took fourth in long jump with a state-qualifying leap of 21-06.5. He also earned eighth in the triple jump.
