The Dickinson High softball wasted little time dismantling its West Region opponent on Saturday.

The Midgets totaled 38 runs in two games to sweep Belcourt at Gress Softball Complex.

"One of the things that I was real happy with is they kept their focus," Dickinson head coach Bill Butterfield said. "A lot of times you get into a situation where you kind of fall asleep and then something happens. We stayed focused all the way through the game."

In the opening game, Dickinson used four solid innings of hitting to win 28-1.

Haley Butterfield took the pitching circle for the Midgets, tossing three innings and allowing one run in first inning. Eighth-grader Madison Jahner came on in relief to throw two innings, allowing one hit and striking out five.

Butterfield went 1-for-3 at the plate and scored three runs.

Maycie Morin was charged with the loss, giving up nine hits.

Dickinson (13-7, 10-6 West) was patient at the plate, tallying 18 walks.

"It wasn't waiting around for the perfect pitch, it was waiting around for the pitch they wanted to hit," Bill Butterfield said. "We talked about the focus of not falling into the trap of swinging at a bad pitch."

Briana Farnsworth led the Midgets, going 3-for-4 with a double and scoring five runs. Winter Monette had the only extra-base hit for the Braves.

In the second game, Dickinson blanked Belcourt 10-0 on a pitching gem by senior Kelsey Lafond and Jahner. She threw five innings, allowing two hits and striking out six.

Riana Cooper had her first career home run that turned out to be a walk-off to end the game in five innings. Cooper went 2-for-3 and scored two runs.

"These home runs we've had this year are the first we've ever had in our program, just about," Bill Butterfield said. "This is a whole new thing for us."

Madison Gourneau was credited with the loss, but she was able to flash moments of brilliance with easy first and third innings.

The Midgets' next stop is traveling to West Region opponent Jamestown at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.

"We haven't played Jamestown yet and it will be a lot of unknowns going into the game," Bill Butterfield said. "We're looking forward to playing them for the first time this year."
