Dickinson State softball athlete of the week - Kayla Stephens

Kayla Stephens, hit two home runs for the Dickinson State softball team over four games against Waldorf University on Friday, April 6 and Saturday, April 7. The Blue Hawks won the series 3-1. The junior went 8-for-15 at the plate, including a triple, two doubles and three singles. She drove in seven RBIs on the weekend.

DP: Where are you from and why did you choose DSU?

KS: "I'm from Las Vegas, Nevada and I chose DSU because of the coaching staff."

DP: How long have you been playing softball for?

KS: "Since I was about 7, so about 14 years."

DP: What's your favorite part about it?

KS: "The competitiveness."

DP: What are the team goals for the year?

KS: "We take it one game at a time because it's the most important game."

DP: What positions do you play?

KS: "I've played third (base) for most of this year. I played second (base) for the team last year. But I grew up playing every position.

DP: If you only had to eat one food for the rest of your life what would you choose?

KS: "Chicken. It's protein, I have to have it."

DP: What's the last show you binged on Netflix?

KS: "I binge on Scandal and Criminal Minds. So, I watch Criminal Minds and then I watch Scandal."

DP: What's your major?

KS: "I'm double majoring in nursing and business administration."

DP: Any plans for after college yet?

KS: "I want to open up my own facility or be a travel nurse."

DP: Who has been your biggest inspiration to succeed?

KS: "My dad, always. Just through every up and down he's always been there and he's been my coach for my whole life and I try to listen to what he has to say."
