Presentation takes one victory from DSU softball in walk-off win

ABERDEEN, S.D. — Going into the seventh inning of the fourth and final game against Presentation College (S.D.), the Dickinson State softball team led 7-5. The Saints scored one run by way of error by Blue Hawks catcher Claire Shoffit, advancing runners to third and second at the same time. The Saints tied it when the next batter, Shanice Webb grounded out to score Lenessa Nelson. In the bottom of the ninth, a line drive off the bat of Saints senior Amber Ewert scored teammate Krystle Schweers, taking the 8-7 win and eliminating DSU’s chances at a sweep.

The Blue Hawks won the previous three games against Presentation by scores of 11-1, 1-0, and 2-0 on Saturday, April 28 and Sunday, April 29.

In the team’s win, Presentation pitcher Ashlyn O’Keefe threw the whole outing, allowing six hits, striking out five and walking three.

In the Blue Hawks 11-1 victory, junior Rayleen Ortiz pushed a 3-1 lead to 7-1 with a grand slam in the fifth inning.

Over two games, Blue Hawks senior Mariah Gamboa went 4-for-6, including one double and two RBI. Junior Kayla Stephens went 4-for-11, including two doubles and two RBI.

In the 1-0 win, DSU senior pitcher Jalen Creech earned the shutout, striking out five. Junior Abi Brooks earned the shutout in the 2-0 win on Sunday, allowing three hits and dismissing two in the process.
