Blue Hawks win two of three in Tucson

TUCSON, Ariz. — With back-to-back days of canceled games due to inclement weather, the Dickinson State softball team tweeted out a photo from Top Golf saying its 'business trip was turning into quite a vacation.'

With the sun back out Thursday, March 14, the Blue Hawks got back to business, facing three teams rather than two as a means to make up for the cancellations.

Dickinson State made the transition smoothly, winning two of their three games from Lincoln Park.

Against Graceland University (Mo.), Dickinson State used late-inning runs to win 3-1, then they topped Robert Morris University (Ill.) 7-3, before falling to Aquinas College (Mich.) 3-0.

"I think they were both good wins," Dickinson State head coach Kristen Fleury said of the first two games. "Both teams were aggressive. In the first game, they jumped out on us 1-0 and we were able to punch back and score some runs. ... In the second game, again they scored on us first and we were able to punch back again and just get some more runs across the board."

In the fifth inning of the first game, Yellowjackets senior Cameryn Kuehl hit a solo home run to put Graceland up 1-0.

In the sixth, senior shortstop Sonja Lawrence doubled in senior right fielder Andrea Rodriguez, who earlier singled to get on base.

Following a double from senior catcher Claire Shoffit, Dickinson State head coach put Jordan Menke on the bag as a pinch runner. Two pitches later, senior Whitney Mesi homered, sealing the 3-1 victory.

All the while, sophomore Jaya Allen was on the bump. Over seven innings, she allowed five hits while striking out nine and walking one.

Shoffit homered in the win over Robert Morris, going 5-for-7 on the day, with a pair of doubles, a home run and three RBIs.

Senior pitcher Abi Brooks got the nod to start game two, lasting 5 innings and allowing three runs on seven hits.

Allen, who doubled twice, threw the final two innings, striking out six batters in the process. Through the third matchup, Allen remained on the mound, throwing a complete game as Dickinson State fell 3-0 to Aquinas College. With 12 more fanned opponents, Allen brought her 'K' total to 27 on the day. She also hit 3-for-9 with a pair of doubles and RBIs.

"Jaya's our four-hitter, Claire is our six-hitter, both of them are big RBI hitters for us," Fleury said. "We just hope the other kids get on base to give them a chance to hit them in."

In the final meeting of the day, the Blue Hawks (10-7) went down 1-0 in the third as Saints senior Briana Mairose doubled to drive in sophomore Kallie Sears.

With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Lawrence had a chance to score Rodriguez, who was at third. However, Lawrence grounded out on the first pitch of her at-bat, ending the inning.

A triple from freshman Izzy Dawson extended the Saints' lead to 3-0 with two outs in the seventh. The Blue Hawks were stymied in their final attempt to score in the seventh.

Saints pitcher Mandy Rosol was stellar, going the distance while striking out five and walking two.

Just two Dickinson State players made contact against Rosol, as senior infielder Kayla Stephens singled in the second and Rodriguez had a base knock to start the sixth.

"We would have liked to have that last game, but I think the long day was wearing on us and we just weren't able to get hits when we needed them," Fleury said.
