Blue Hawks swept by Vikings on the road

VALLEY CITY — A 6-1 loss to Concordia University (Neb.) at the Tucson Invitational Games is the only blemish on the Valley City State softball team’s season so far. In a four-game series with Dickinson State, the Vikings continued that dominance, sweeping the Blue Hawks and outscoring them by a combined total of 27-7.

After completing the series on Monday, April 1, on Shelly Ellig Field, the Vikings stretched their record to 28-1 and 8-0 against North Star opponents.

On Sunday, March 31, Valley City State no-hit Dickinson State in an 8-0 victory that came in five innings. Emily Smith walked just one while striking out 11 batters.

The second Sunday outing and the first of Monday, were quite similar, with the Vikings winning  6-2 and 7-2. The Blue Hawks (13-14, 3-5 NSAA) had seven hits over both games, with sophomore pitcher Jaya Allen and freshman center fielder Rhea Paiva earning a base knock in each.

Monday’s final match was Dickinson State’s best showing, but they still fell 6-3.

In the first inning, senior shortstop Sonja Lawrence singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored while senior catcher Claire Shoffit reached on an error. However, the Vikings countered the effort, scoring three runs each in the third and fourth innings.

The Blue Hawks pushed senior left fielder Andrea Rodriguez home as Allen singled on a line drive in the top of the fifth. In the seventh, the visitors mustered one more run as Allen grounded out and senior catcher Jordan Menke snuck home.
