Sonja Lawrence, a senior on the Dickinson State softball team was the only Blue Hawk to record multiple hits in each game of a four-game series with Viterbo University (Wis.) on Saturday, April 6 and Sunday, April 7. The Blue Hawks and V-Hawks split the series, with Dickinson State winning 8-0 on Saturday, and 6-5 via walk-off on Sunday.

Lawrence, a Las Vegas native, went 9-for-16, earning four RBI and scoring six runs. Her .374 batting average is the second highest on the team and she leads the squad with 23 runs scored.

DP: Why did you choose Dickinson State?

SL: "Kayla Stephens, our second baseman actually recruited me here. We were playing together when we were 10 years old and she got me out here."

DP: How long have you been playing softball and what do you most enjoy about it?

SL: "Since I was nine years old and I enjoy the teammates and just having people that will always be there for me."

DP: What is your major?

SL: "Business administration and human resource management."

DP: Do you participate in anything else on campus?

SL: "Nope, just softball."

DP: What has been your key to success at the plate?

SL: "Kind of just relaxing and not getting in my own head and just looking for my pitch to swing at and getting ahead in the count and not falling behind."

DP: What is your secret to being defensively sound at shortstop?

SL: "Also not getting in my head, trying to stay loose, knowing that I have the capabilities and I'm able to make these plays and just going out and doing it."

DP: If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?

SL: "Chicken. Can't mess that up, so many options."

DP: Who is your favorite athlete?

SL: "Larry Bird."

DP: If you could only vacation one place for the rest of your life, what would it be?

SL: "Thailand, some beaches."

DP: What is the best show or movie you watched recently?

SL: "Gossip Girl. It's been a while, but it's a staple."

DP: What would you say is your spirit animal?

SL: "I like to say a tiger."

DP: Who or what is your biggest inspiration to succeed?

SL: "Definitely my family. I'm the oldest of five, so I want to set an example for all my little, younger ones out there. Make sure they know what they're doing, get out there and attack things."
