Dickinson State softball exchanges shutouts with Presentation
ABERDEEN, S.D. — Thanks to 10 strikeouts from sophomore pitcher Jaya Allen, the Dickinson State softball team defeated Presentation College (S.D.) 13-0 in five innings, on Wednesday, April 10, at the Presentation Dome in Aberdeen.
In the first game of the afternoon, Dickinson State outhit Presentation 5-4 but fell 3-0.
This is the third time this season Allen as earned double-digit K's, coming away with 12 in seven innings twice. However, this is the first time she's earned 10 in five innings.
"After we dropped the first one, she came back with some fight," Dickinson State head coach Kristen Fleury said. "She threw the ball well, hit her spots well. She kept the batters off balance. She was able to get a few strikeouts and only give up a couple hits."
Sophomore Bibiana Villeda went the distance in game one, giving up five hits over seven hits while striking out a pair of Blue Hawk batters. She also started game two, lasting 3⅓ innings on the bump.
She allowed eight runs on nine hits and walked one before junior Darrian Gibson took over giving up five runs on six hits while walking four.
"In between games, we just really pounded on making the adjustments," Fleury said. "It was a matter of moving up in the box, moving back in the box, doing something different, because obviously the first game, it didn't work. So, it was good to see them make those adjustments and come back with a little fire and energy."
The Blue Hawks offense was headed by senior first baseman Whitney Mesi and freshman center fielder Rhea Paiva, who each earned three hits.
A grounder from Allen allowed senior left fielder Andrea Rodriguez to score after she singled to start the first. Dickinson State really got going in the second, though, as Paiva, senior shortstop Sonja Lawrence and senior catcher Claire Shoffit plated runners, putting the Blue Hawks up 5-0.
After consecutive one-two-three innings from Allen, the Blue Hawks were back at it, scoring five runs in the fourth, and three more in the fifth before the game was called after five complete frames.
In the first game of the doubleheader, Shoffit went 2-for-3, while Rodriguez, Lawrence and Allen also earned hits.
Blue Hawks starting pitcher Abi Brooks was solid, allowing three runs on four hits over six innings, while striking out three. Brooks gave up a game-starting single to senior Cortni Medoza, who scored two batters later as senior Krystle Schweers executed a sacrifice bunt to give the Saints a 1-0 lead.
In the sixth, senior Sierra Kilmer hit a two-run home run over the right field wall, putting the Saints up 3-0.
The Blue Hawks (16-17, 6-8 NSAA) had chances to score, but left six runners on base. Shoffit and Allen singled in the sixth before a fielder's choice ended the inning, and senior second baseman Kayla Stephens reached on an error in the top of the seventh, but was stranded as the Saints (3-27, 2-12 NSAA) ended the game on another fielder's choice out at second.
"I don't know if it was a lack of focus, a lack of energy, but we hit a lot of the pitchers' pitches and not hitting our pitches," Fleury said. "We didn't make any in-game adjustments. We got runners on base, but we couldn't move them around and get them in and that results in a loss."
