VALLEY CITY - The No. 4 Dickinson State softball team battled through a nine-inning affair with No. 5 Waldorf (Iowa) in the first round of the conference tournament. The fight fell in Dickinson State’s favor, as they won 2-1, sending them on to face No. 1 Valley City State, who bested the Blue Hawks 7-1 on Thursday, May 2 from Valley City State.

Following a Warriors run in the fourth and a Blue Hawks score in the sixth, the teams were deadlocked at one, forcing the game to extra innings.

In the bottom of the ninth, the women in blue and grey took advantage of fatiguing Waldorf starting pitcher Karlee Leyvas. Senior catcher Claire Shoffit drew a four-pitch walk to start the inning, and Dickinson State starting pitcher Jaya Allen reached on an error, bringing up senior first baseman Whitney Mesi.

Shoffit and Allen moved to third and second on a passed ball, and on the next pitch, Mesi sent the ball flying. Left fielder Brynlee Gibbs made the play, but couldn’t throw to home in time. After tagging up, Shoffit touched the plate, sealing the 2-1 win.

In the next round against the Vikings, starting pitcher Allen allowed three runs in the first inning.

Meanwhile, the Blue Hawks mustered just five hits against Valley City, with Mesi and senior Kayla Stephens coming away with a pair of hits, including a double each.

Dickinson State will meet Waldorf again on Friday at noon local time in a loser-out game.
