Midgets softball splits contests at Jamestown
JAMESTOWN — After suffering a tough 3-1 loss to Jamestown in game one, the Dickinson High softball team came back to win 10-7 in game two on Tuesday, May 14, on the road.
Freshman Mataya Mortensen did what she could on the mound, allowing three runs, one earned, on four hits. Over her six innings of work, she struck out three and walked four.
Blue Jays sophomore pitcher Payton Gall bested Mortensen and the Midgets, giving up a run on three hits while striking out four and walking two.
Junior Taylor Nelson collected two of three Dickinson hits, with senior Brianna Ashworth earning the other.
In game two, the bats finally got going for both teams.
Jamestown scored seven runs in the first three frames to take a 7-4 lead. An RBI single from Nelson in the top of the fourth cut the lead to two runs. Two batters later, freshman catcher Taya Hopfauf scored on a wild pitch, trimming the deficit to one.
Following a scoreless fifth, the Midgets plated four to jump ahead in the sixth.
Senior Kennedy Kuntz opened the inning with a single and senior Kamryn Kuntz moved Kennedy over with a sacrifice bunt.
After a drawn walk by Kali Kubas and a line out by Emy Personne, Reese Hauck took to the plate. She doubled to bring in both base runners, who previously advanced on a wild pitch. Next, Ashworth and Mortensen singled to bring in two more runs before Hopfauf flied out to end the inning.
Dickinson (19-7, 9-5 WDA) used three pitchers in the contest. After freshman Hope Fath and seventh-grader Ava Jahner combined to allow seven runs over 2 ⅔ innings, Mortensen returned to the bump where she was dominant. Through 4 ⅓ frames, she fanned four and walked to. The Blue Jays (12-10, 8-8 WDA) put up six hits but didn't score on her watch.
