After the first day of the Dickinson Classic, the Dickinson High wrestling team doesn’t have many complaints.
The big reason is the Midgets have seven wrestlers in the semifinals and are sitting at the top of the standings with 115 points.
Dickinson head coach Adam Orton said the team transferred its energy from the West Region dual win against Williston on Thursday to the first day of the Dickinson Classic on Friday.
“They definitely started out well today,” Orton said. “We got a bunch in the semis and a lot of kids that have a good chance to come back in the wrestlebacks. We got a good chance of winning it.”
Though the Midgets have seven wrestlers headed to the semifinals, only one can’t score team points -Caden Haugen at 120 pounds. The freshman is wrestling unattached and has wins over Brandon Blumhagen of Custer County (Mont.) and Trey Sokoloski of Dawson County (Mont.).
Haugen’s match in the semifinals is against Dickinson’s Jaret Lee. The sophomore has scored 14 team points receiving a first-round bye and pinning Williston’s Roy Isom in two minutes.
“It’s not the greatest feeling that we have to wrestle against each other,” Lee said of the semifinal match. “If we were on the other side of the bracket and it was in the finals, it would be better. It’s pretty much going to be like the wrestling room, because we wrestle against each other every day in practice.”
The five other Dickinson wrestler which qualified for the semifinals are Austin Hutzenbiler (113), Devin Berger (132), Michael Cherwinski (145), Clayton Tangen (152) and Justin Meyer (182). The lowest place the seven semifinalists can finish is in sixth.
Hutzenbiler and Cherwinski said the team came out and performed extremely well.
“Winning that dual was really a confidence booster coming in the tournament,” said Hutzenbiler, who is ranked No. 2 at 113 pounds. “The guys looked pretty tough.”
Cherwinski added: “After having last week off, we were all just excited to come out and wrestle. We all felt pretty good and we all wrestle really well.”
The Midgets also have five wrestlers, which are still alive scoring points in the tournament. Dual Keck (heavyweight) and Sterling Quintanilla (195) can place as high as third and as low as sixth. Chris Sickler (220), Raphael Lopez (170) and Thomas Irwin (138) have the ability to place as high as third and as low as eighth.
For Killdeer, the team has all six varsity wrestlers alive after the first day. The Cowboys also have three semifinalists - including Derek Tabor (145), Dillan Jepson (160) and David Dukart (195). Killdeer is in ninth with 60 points.
“We’ve have been doing really well and working really hard in practice,” said Jepson, who is a freshman. “(Head coach) Shane (Olson) has been pushing us to get better at moves and focus on our moves.”
Entering this season, the Cowboys returned multiple wrestlers with state tournament experience.
Killdeer head coach Shane Olson said it has been a plus to have wrestlers with state experience as underclassmen. The Cowboys only have one senior - Dukart - and one junior Tanner Rohde. The rest are sophomores and freshmen.
“Those freshmen and sophomores have been wrestling for two or three years on varsity, so they are coming along pretty well,” Olson said. “With that experience, they are starting to wrestle really well for as young as they are.”
Though the first day treated Killdeer and Dickinson well, the teams want to continue focus into the second day of the tournament beginning at 9 a.m. today.
“(The message after the first day of the tournament) was congratulatory, but we can’t get cocky or anything,” Orton said. “We have to be ready and focus for (today).”
Olson added: “None of our kids are beat out yet, so we have three in the wrestlebacks and three in the semifinals.”
