The weather was almost perfect at the Carlson Booster track and field meet Friday at Huffman Track at the Badlands Activities Center.

A one-day delay due to cold weather and high wind on Thursday paid off as the conditions were almost perfect for competition.

The only bad part of the day was a moderate headwind on the front stretch. Times were higher than expected because of the wind.

Other than that, it turned out to be a good meet for Dickinson High as the boys were second in the team standings and the girls were third.

Dickinson's boys scored 188 points, with Bismarck Century taking first with 289 points.

On the girls' side, the Midgets scored 119.75 points, Century was second with 137.37 points and Bismarck took first with 167.37 points.

Junior Jess Herauf led the girls with three first-place finishes and a second-place finish. She won the 300-meter hurdles, javelin and was the anchor of the first-place 1,600 relay that beat Minot by 4 seconds.

She broke the school record in the javelin with a throw of 128 feet, 1 inch, surpassing the state-qualifying mark by 13 feet.

"She's such a talent, but she works so darn hard at it, too," Dickinson co-head coach Dave Michaelson said. "It makes it even more gratifying. Personally, I think the sky's the limit for her. I think she can easily beat the 130-foot barrier."

Herauf's discus throw of 120-1 also beat the state-qualifying mark of 115 feet.

She said getting qualifications out of the way helps her progress during the season.

"It takes some weight off your shoulders and you can relax a bit," Herauf said. "It's more about PRs (personal records) than about qualifying now."

Junior Kara Froelich finished second in the 300 hurdles, ran the second-leg of the winning 1,600 relay team, ran the first leg of the first-place 400 relay and ran the first leg of the third-place 800 relay.

The Midgets' 400 relay qualified for state with a time of 50.26 seconds, with the 800 and 1,600 relays also posting qualifying times. The Midgets' 3,200 relay took third, but did not post a qualifying time.

Juniors Brie Lynch and Amity Lantz had good efforts in their sprints for Dickinson, with Lantz placing second in the 100 and Lynch taking second in the 200. Lynch also ran in the 400, 800 and 1,600 relays, with Lantz running in the 400 and 800 relays.

Jessica Dolechek took third in the shot put.

Dickinson Trinity sophomore Andrea Jirges took a break from the individual sprints and it paid off with a second-place leap of 17-0½ in the long jump that beat the state-qualifying mark. It was only Jirges' second time competing in the long jump.

She decided to try long jump instead of triple jump because it was easier on her body.

"Triple jump hurts my hip really bad and long jump isn't as tough on your body," Jirges said. "I decided to try that (long jump) and hold off on triple jump for a while."

Jirges anchored the third-place 400 relay team that qualified for state with a time of 52.14.

While Trinity did well in some events, head coach Craig Kovash sees room for improvement. He said the headwind made it tough to qualify in the track events.

"We've had some good efforts today, but we're not quite there yet," Kovash said. "It will take a little more time."

For Bowman County, senior Anne Duletski led the Bulldogs with a third-place finish in the 100.

Dickinson spread its success around several events.

The boys' 800 (1:35.39) and 1,600 (3:33.55) relay teams took first, with the 400 relay taking second to Century by .15 of a second.

Dickinson's boys took care of the sprints with wins in the 100 and 200, and a second-place finish in the 400. The Midgets took first and second in the 800 as well.

Senior Calen Beaudoin blew past the competition in the 200 as his winning time of 23.45 was nine-tenths of a second ahead of the second-place finisher. Sophomore Brett Braunagel won the 100 with a time of 12 seconds.

Senior Sam Ingman just missed out on a state-qualifying time in the 400 as his time of 52.39 was fifteen-hundredths of a second behind the standard.

Freshman Austin Mack won the 800 with a time of 2:08.04, with sophomore Mike Porter taking second with a time of 2:08.98.

Midgets senior Luke Van Ells took third in both the 110 and 300 hurdles.

Senior Shivam Patel won the long jump with a leap of 20-3¼ and took third in the triple jump. It was Patel's first win in the long jump this year.

"It feels good, I guess," Patel said. "It's a big improvement from last year from working hard over the summer."

Beaudoin was second in the long jump as he equaled Patel's mark, but lost the second-best jump tie-breaker to Patel.

Dickinson senior Jordan Malchose, beat the state qualifying mark in the javelin by 10 feet. Malchose's attempt of 170 feet gave him the win by an easy margin.

"What's more exciting than anything is that it's a 6- or 7-foot jump in his personal best from last year," Michaelson said.

Senior Travis Hagg took second in the high jump with a leap of 6-0 and senior Beau Miller placed second in the high jump with a 6-2 jump.

The Dickinson boys don't get much rest as the Midgets head out today for the Mandan MAR meet.

Trinity seniors Austin Fridrich and Klark Rummel led their team in individual events. Fridrich was fourth in the shot put and discus, while Rummel was fourth in the javelin.

"They're real close," Kovash said of the boys' performance in the field events. "A couple of more meets, a little more experience and more work, some of these things are going to fall into place."
