The Dickinson Trinity girls basketball team rebounded its way into the semifinals of the Region 7 tournament.

The Titans rode a 43-24 edge on the boards to a 47-34 quarterfinal win over Bowman County on Monday at the Knights of Columbus Activities Center.

"We challenged our girls before practice last week and before tonight's game," Dickinson Trinity Alysia Hugret said of the team's rebounding. "We had some girls come out and do a great job."

Trinity moves on to the semifinals against Beach at 7:30 p.m. while Bowman County, which gave up 23 offensive rebounds, ends its season at 12-7.

"We knew we had to limit them to one possession," Bowman County coach Kent Harding said. "We missed some assignments. It was hard to find people (to box out) in our zone (defense). We struggled with that."

The Bulldogs managed to keep it close with a defense that forced 19 turnovers. With 2 minutes, 41 seconds to go, Trinity held a 40-34 lead.

However, the Titans went 5 of 6 from the free-throw line down the stretch and on the free throw that was missed, senior Avery Jirges scored on a putback. All this while the Titans defense pitched a shutout.

Jirges finished with team-highs of 10 points and nine rebounds.

"Avery Jirges showed up tonight," Hugret said. "She got after things. Just her effort doing the little things was huge for us tonight."

Trinity did a better job of containing Bowman County seniors Allison Hanson and Megan Naico in the fourth quarter. Naico finished with a game-high 16 points, but was shut out in the final period. Hanson had 14 points, 12 of them in the first three quarters.

"I thought the girls adjusted well," Hugret said. "(At halftime), they were the only two that had attempted a shot."

Trinity had a 28-20 lead at halftime, but saw the gap diminish as Bowman County drew within two points at the end of the third. Nonetheless, Trinity extended its 32-30 lead by getting multiple chances at scoring every time down the floor.

Hugret said the rebounding was especially important because the Titans didn't shoot very well. They shot 29 percent in the second half and finished 35 for the game.

"We thought the shots would eventually fall, but they never did," Hugret said. "If you do the little things, the rest will take care of itself."

Though the season is over for the Bulldogs, Harding noted how far his team had come after starting the 0-4.

"We made huge strides," Harding said. "People understood their roles and they played them to perfection."
