Titans lose first match of season at tournament

VALLEY CITY -- Central Cass handed the Dickinson Trinity volleyball team its first loss of the season Saturday in the Gold Bracket Championship of the Valley City Tournament.

VALLEY CITY -- Central Cass handed the Dickinson Trinity volleyball team its first loss of the season Saturday in the Gold Bracket Championship of the Valley City Tournament.

In its pool, Trinity beat Maple Valley and Fargo Oak Grove and split with Maddock.

The Titans (8-1) then topped Midkota 25-13, 25-19 in the quarterfinals of tournament play and beat Okaes 25-21, 27-29, 15-9 in the semifinals.

Central Cass upended the Titans 25-15, 25-14 in the championship.

Ashley Sickler had 50 kills, eight aces and six blocks over the 13 games Trinity played. Setter Kendra Kovash had 102 assists, a team-high 11 aces and 38 digs.

"We really came together well in the end," Trinity coach Melini Grosulak said. "... I thought they (the Titan players) were really surprised with how well we played and that we can compete with so many different teams."
