NEW ENGLAND - The Dickinson Trinity girls basketball team locked up the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Region 7 Tournament following a 40-39 victory against New England on Saturday, Feb. 9, from New England High School.

“Saturday wasn’t pretty,” Titans head coach Carter Fong said, “but we found a way. New England played three excellent quarters, controlled the pace of the game with a half-court trap, and had us on our heels.”

The Tigers held a lead at the end of each quarter, including a 12-4 advantage at the end of the first. After Titans sophomore guard Kara Wanner knocked down a 3-pointer at the closing moments of the third, Dickinson Trinity trailed 30-25 before out-scoring the home team 15-9 in the final frame.

Down 40-36, Tigers junior guard Molly Rayhorn drained a shot from long distance, pulling New England to within one with six seconds left. Fouled and sent to the line on the ensuing inbound, Trinity sophomore forward Abbey Kubas missed the front end of a 1-and-1. While the Tigers pulled down the rebound, they were unable to get a shot off before time expired.

Kubas paced the Titans with 16 points while adding 15 rebounds, five blocks, and four steals. Rayhorn led all scorers with 18 points.
