Dickinson High gymnasts Fossum, Kudrna place 1st, 2nd at state meet
The standouts for the Dickinson High gymnastics team showed exactly why they’re standouts during the state meet in 2015.
Dickinson juniors Acacia Fossum and Keana Kudrna finished first and second, respectively, in the all-around during the North Dakota championship in February at Minot High School gymnasium.
Kudrna finished runner-up in the all-around with a 37.700.
“When we were both on the podium, we started to tear up,” Kudrna said in the Feb. 29 article. “It was a very special moment to have with my best friend.”
Fossum earned the fourth-best all-around performance in history (38.667), scoring a 9.500 on bars, 9.717 on beam, 9.800 on floor and 9.650 on vault.
Fossum became one of just seven gymnasts in the entire country to win four state all-around titles, according to the National Federation of State High School Associations’ record book.
Heart River golf finds success at state
Heart River senior Jada Mattson was the Class B senior athlete of the year, and sophomore Joey Wagner won the Class B state title during the 2015 high school golf seasons.
Mattson was the individual medalist and senior athlete of the year at the Region 5 tournament in May, while head coach Kirby Robb was coach of the year.
Mattson was also named Class B senior athlete of the year after shooting a two-day total of 165 for runner-up at the state meet in Jamestown. Heart River was third as a team at state.
Wagner finished 1-under par with a two-day score of 143 to win the North Dakota Class B boys state golf individual championship in May in Carrington.
Wagner began the day 2-over par, and responded a 3-under round. He also led the team to third place with a team score of 631.
