After crossing the finish line second in the 400-meter dash, Killdeer senior Shawnee Hansen hugged the winner, senior Kayla Ogle from Watford City. The two are set to be roommates at the University of Mary next year and congratulated each other after a ridiculously quick race.

Even without an official time in, it was clear Ogle had run a sub-one minute lap and the standings confirmed it: 58.3. As for Hansen, she ran a 1:00.33, qualifying for state in the event for the first time this season.

After a win in the 200-meter dash later, Hansen hugged runner-up Masy Kuntz, a senior out of Dickinson Trinity.

"It's really having these girls here with me," Hansen said. "We're all really good friends and that's really nice to have. It's good sportsmanship."

While athletes can still qualify for the state championships in the Southwest Region meet at Bowman County, the weather is looking treacherous. The meet originally scheduled for Saturday, was moved up to Friday, but the weather still calls for wind, rain and cold. If the forecast rings true, the sunny Last Chance Meet at the Biesiot Activities Center on Tuesday, May 14, might have truly been the last good chance at a qualifying time or distance.

"Times and distances are going to be hard to come by," Bowman County head coach Jonathan Jahner said. "The forecast doesn't look good at all and it keeps trending worse and worse. (Friday) is a long way away, so you never know. ... If you're gonna run or hit a qualifying mark in 41 degrees with 20 miles-an-hour wind and rain, then you're kind of a dude. I'm not expecting anyone to set the world on fire."

Bowman County qualified in numerous events Tuesday, including three different relay teams.

The girls 4x100 and 4x200 crossed the line just ahead of the standard. In the final event of the day, the combination of Esmeralda Madrigal, Alexius Miller, Jenna Buccholz and Ellie Stafford ran the 4x400 relay in 4:15.13, a second better than the qualifying standard.

The boys 4x100 improved on its previous qualifying time, placing second with a time of 45.44 seconds, half a second faster than the qualifying mark. Dickinson Trinity won the event with a time of 44.41.

"We improved a lot of our marks," Jahner said. "Alex Madrigal ran a better 800 time, that was good to see. A lot of our boys throwers are in. ... I don't want to say it was a run-of-the-mill day, but it was a good day."

Additionally, Mortiz Melzer bested his previous qualifying mark in the discus with an event-winning throw of 140 feet, 4 inches.

Junior Jill Svihovec qualified in the long jump, finishing fifth with a distance of 16 feet, 10 ¼ inches, while teammate senior Ellie Stafford qualified in triple jump as she finished third with a leap of 34-04.5.

Hettinger-Scranton sophomore Sidra Sadowsky finished third in the 800-meter run with a state-qualifying time of 2:25.81. She's been chasing the figure all spring and finally cracked it.

"Our coach gives us someone to stick with during a race and so I've been running with the three top girls in the region all year," Sadowsky said. "So, my goal is to just stay with them and compete with them as much as I could and I tried to do that today and I think that helped."

While Beach senior Samuel Clarke ran a personal-best time of 23.8 seconds in the 200-meter dash, he didn't meet the standard. He'll have to rely on a third-place finish or better at regionals to book a spot. The girls 4x200 relay team and sophomore thrower Molly Farstveet were nearing qualifying marks, but fell just shy. So as of Tuesday, the Buccaneers have just one state-bound athlete.

"Jared Wojahn (is) qualified in the 400 and right now he's running the fastest time in the region," Beach head coach Mike Zier said. "Our relays are close and we're close in some other things. It's really been a great day, though."

Unfortunately for Richardton-Taylor, the day played out similarly. A handful of Raiders are extremely close to qualifying, but none met the necessary numbers Tuesday.

Owen Voigt is near qualifying in the 400 and 300-meter hurdles, Skylar Crow is extremely close in the 100 and Kat Baranko is nearly there in the 100-meter hurdles and 200. They'll have to eke out a qualifying time or a top-three finish in the regional meet Friday instead.

"It's kind of one of those days where the heat kind of got to us. We've had cold weather all year," Raiders head coach Shawn Alder said. "I think we perform better in bad weather. I think they can do it, compete and try to take top three in their events since the top three make it (at regionals.)"
