Dickinson Trinity’s Lance Reiter had to wait until his senior year, but he finally qualified for state in an individual event.
By finishing third in Saturday’s 400 meters in 53.77 seconds at the Biesiot Activities Center, Reiter qualified by place, adding the event to his state meet schedule, along with the 1,600- and 3,200-meter relays.
“I’ve been running the 400 and trying to get it qualified since sophomore year and was always in that 53 (second) range. It felt good to finally get it today,” he said. “It’ll feel different, but I’m excited for it.”
Reiter’s accomplishment was one of many for the Titans track and field teams, as the boys and girls each took first place at the Southwest Regional track and field championships.
“The efforts that we had, both boys and girls, we always talk about how we perform at the regional carries over to the state meet,” Titans head coach Craig Kovash said, “and we feel really good about that after today.”
Trinity’s boys amassed 179 team points, while Mott-Regent (98) and Bowman County (96) placed second and third, respectively. Trinity’s girls collected 137 team points, which bested second place Killdeer (113) and third place Hettinger-Scranton (111).
“It just shows that your hard work really does pay off,” Trinity freshman Masy Kuntz said. “We all work our butts off in practice to try to win meets like these.”
Kuntz’s day was highlighted by a triple jump of 36 feet, 3.5 inches, which earned her first place and broke the Southwest Region meet’s record of 36-3 - set in 2012 by Mott-Regent’s Abby Honeyman, who will be competing at the NAIA national meet this week for Dickinson State.
“I had no clue what the record was,” Kuntz said, “but I was just going to jump my best. It’s just making me more and more excited for state. It’s all I’ve been thinking about for the last week - state and all the memories you make there.”

Kuntz also took first in the 100 meters (12.76), third in the 200 meters (26.97) and second in the long jump (17-7).
Trinity’s Dawson Kram swept the boys 100 and 200 meters in 10.80 seconds and 22.33 seconds, respectively, breaking both records for the Southwest Regional meet. Kram’s 100 time broke Killdeer’s Lewis Dobitz’s mark of 11.06 seconds from 2014; the latter time broke Bowman County’s Michael Palczewski’s record of 22.52 in 2012.
Trinity’s Noah Sickler also placed first in the 400 meters in 52.35 seconds.
Mott-Regent’s Brady Wegh broke his own Southwest Region meet record in the 110-meter hurdles, finishing in 15.12 seconds - which bested his 2015 time of 15.93 seconds. Wegh also placed first in the long jump (21) and triple jump (42-9).
Killdeer senior Hayes LeMieux had a busy day for the Cowboys, rushing around from event to event in the early part of the day.
After making the finals of the triple jump, he ran back to the high jump to get his last attempts in there.
He won the high jump at 5-10, then logged a throw of 131-4 in the discus to place second, qualifying in both events. He fell two inches short of qualifying in the triple jump, finishing in fourth place at 41-4. He also ran the second leg of the 400-meter relay with Hoyt Zander, Dillan Jepson and Cole Dukart, a team that placed third to qualify in 46.34 seconds.
“To get two inches under qualifying is kind of a bummer, but to make state in three other events is pretty good,” LeMieux said.
Corrie Dobitz, a sophomore at Killdeer, tied her school’s record in the pole vault at 9-6 and placed first in the event, despite strong gusts of wind throughout the competition.
“(The wind) wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be, but it definitely made a difference,” she said.
Teammate Sydney Andersen was third in the pole vault (9) to also qualify, so Dobitz was thankful she had at least one other vaulter at state with her.
“It’s nice. We push each other and help each other out,” Dobitz said. “It really helps me to have other people vaulting with me.”
Hettinger-Scranton senior Sam Kludt placed third in the triple jump at 42-1, and he helped the Night Hawks’ 400- and 1,600-meter relay teams place second (45.80) and third (3:48.07).
The 400 relay team - which included Hayden Sadowsky, Brandon Pierce and Sam’s younger brother Isaiah - finished just .04 seconds after Trinity’s group of Jayden Dolecheck, Michael Marsh, Sean Volesky and Kram, but Sam expects Hettinger-Scranton to have a better showing next week.
“It’s a really good feeling. We should be even faster at state,” he said. “We’re keeping positive. It was nice to get it actually qualified so we can at least run at state. We had been close the whole year, and now that we got it, it’s a good feeling.”
