BELCOURT -- It wasn't supposed to be this close, but Dickinson Trinity escaped Belcourt with a 25-24 Class AA, West Region overtime win Friday night.
"There's no excuse when you know what to expect," Trinity coach Randy Gordon said. "We were still in the bus for a long time."
Quarterback Ben Gordon's 7-yard run in overtime, with Brendin Steiner's PAT, gave Trinity (4-3 overall, 4-2 West) a good chance to clinch a state playoff berth.
"This was an uphill battle the whole night," Randy Gordon said.
Gordon ran for three scores and threw for one, and had 53 rushing yards on nine attempts. He threw for 138 yards on 13 of 20 attempts.

Braves quarterback Christian McCloud hit Clarence Davis for a 12-yard touchdown pass to open the extra period, but the conversion kick failed.
Belcourt (1-6, 0-5) led 18-12 in the fourth quarter when Gordon's 13-yard touchdown run tied the game.
Wyatt Azure game the Braves the lead earlier in the fourth with a 2-yard run.
"They threw a lot and he was athletic," Gordon said.
Azure led the Braves with two touchdowns and ran for 70 yards on 15 carries.
"We got it through it and got a win," Randy Gordon said. "That's the important thing."
