HAZEN -- The Dickinson Trinity girls track and field team performed well in just its second meet of the season, qualifying three girls for the state meet and winning the team points title at the Beulah Miner Classic held at the Bison Sports Complex.

"We had a really a pretty good day, especially on the girls side," Trinity coach Craig Kovash said.

Titans senior Breanna Messer won two events and qualified in both. Messer had a leap of 5 feet, 2 inches to win the high jump and edged Hazen's Allison Opp in the 100 hurdles with a time of 16.34 seconds.

Senior Marie Franzen took second in the triple jump with a leap of 34-6¼, but qualified for state. Junior Melissa Bachamp had a qualifying jump of 9 feet in the pole vault but took second next to defending Class B state champion Abbey Aide of Bottineau.

Franzen also won the long jump at 16-4½ but just missed qualifying for state.

"We're getting closer and it's still early," Kovash said of the athletes who just missed out on state-qualifying times and marks.

Mott-Regent eighth-grader Marah Friez qualified for state in the 200 with a time of 26.74. She came in second behind Napoleon's Rikki Schmidt, who ran a 26.14.

On the boys side, Trinity won the meet despite winning just one event.

The 3,200 relay team of Trevor Wilson, Alex Klug, Robert Gardner and Paul Gardner finished with a time of 9:20.47 for the win.

Bowman County's Dustin Maher won the discus with a state-qualifying throw of 49-6¼.

Kovash said it was nice to have seasonable weather for a meet for the first time this year.
