A whipping wind slowed down runners on the backstretch and pushed jumpers further into the pits.

Nevertheless, there few complaints to be heard Friday afternoon at the Badlands Activities Center as the Dickinson State track and field team christened Huffman Track by winning the men's side of its season-opening Blue Hawk Games.

"It is a fast track, it's a great surface to train on and a great surface for good times. That definitely showed today," DSU head coach Pete Stanton said. "The tailwind in our short sprints and our jumps was a big factor for them today."

Jermaine Christie took advantage of the wind at his back, winning the long jump and the 110-meter hurdles, qualifying for the NAIA national championships in each event.

Christie beat teammate Allan Ayala in the 110 hurdles -- Ayala went on to take an easy win in the 400 hurdles -- and blasted off for a meet-record leap of 24 feet, 3¾ inches in the long jump.

"You can never control he weather, but you can always control your attitude, and we did that today," Stanton said.

DSU's men won 10 of the 20 events.

Senior Sean Pickstock was DSU's only other multiple winner. He had a 21.58 to win the 200 meters and a 48.40 in the 400 -- both relatively slow times for Pickstock as he fought the wind, a factor he too said he could have done without.

"It was horrible," said Pickstock, who anchored the 1,600 relay team to a come-from-behind victory. "The first turn was good, then when you reached the back stretch and it was like a hurricane hit you in the face. It slowed down all your momentum and you can't really do much."

Perhaps that's why Jamal Forbes did so well. Forbes' events allowed him to stay closer to the stadium on the front stretch, where the wind wasn't as fierce. He set a meet record and qualified for nationals in the 100 meters with a time of 10.28 seconds and paced the 400 relay team to a win in 42.27 seconds.

Lee Irvine fought the wind to a win in the 800 (1:59.26) and as an alternate in the 1,600 relay, where his burst in the third leg helped bring DSU back from behind and set up Pickstock for his race to the finish.

"He did a really good job," said Ayala, whose spot Irvine took in the relay.

Kurt McCormack leapt 48-7½ to beat teammate Johnny Emtman in the triple jump and ran in the 1,600 relay.

U-Mary thrower Ben Jacobson swept the throwing events, winning the men's shot put, discus and hammer toss.

The Blue Hawk men had 262 team points. The University of Mary finished second with 129.

It was DSU's first home meet since May 2008 -- even that was a small get-together without many elite athletes -- and the first Blue Hawk Games since 2007. Weather and construction on the new stadium had kept the team from holding meets for the majority of the past two years.

"It was so nice to be able to run on this track and for everyone to see our track program, because no one really has," said DSU senior Kelsey Aide, who won the pole vault on attempts with a meet-record and national-qualifying leap of 12-1.

Aide was one of three DSU winners. Senior Kyla Wasser won the 100 with a national-qualifying time of 12.16 seconds and freshman Kim Schulz took the javelin with a throw of 133-10.

U-Mary had 198 team points and won eight events to hold off Black Hills State, who won seven events and had 182 points. DSU was third with 141.

Seven different Marauder women won individual events, including Dickinson native Dakota Wolf, who won the 1,500 meters in 4:59.26 and took second in the 800 in 2:25.24.

Black Hills State thrower Cody Milbourn led her team with wins in both the hammer throw (151-2) and shot put (40-4¼). Yellow Jackets senior Shannon Hellman set a meet record in the 100 hurdles (13.56 seconds) and anchored the winning 1,600 relay (4:15.91).

Because of the role the conditions played in the results, several Blue Hawks said they were frustrated with their times and distances in what will likely be their only home meet of the season.

Pickstock, however, said it gives DSU room for improvement.

"I wish it was warmer, so we could have showed up with better performances," Pickstock said. "I guess they (the fans) will have to look at nationals to see what we can do."
