Wrzesinski in fourth in heptathlon after first day of NAIA indoor track championships

BROOKINGS, S.D. -- After the first day of the NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championships, Dickinson State sophomore Cleet Wrzesinski is in fourth place in the men's heptathlon.

BROOKINGS, S.D. - After the first day of the NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championships, Dickinson State sophomore Cleet Wrzesinski is in fourth place in the men's heptathlon.

Wrzesinski won the long jump, one of four events he competed in on Thursday, Feb. 28, at the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex.

With a total of 2,785 points, Wrzesinski is just 156 points behind Josh Malone of Carroll College (Mont.), who holds on to first place with 2,941 points.

His leap of 7.1 meters earned Wrzesinski 838 points and a victory in long jump. The Baker, Mont., native finished third in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.11 seconds, while Pieter Top of Westmont College (Calif.) took first in 6.92 seconds. Wrzesinski used a personal-best height in high jump of 1.93 meters, or 6 feet, 4 inches, to collect fifth and 740 points. During the shot put, he struggled through, finishing last of 16 competitors with a throw of 7.95 meters, good for 363 points.

Wrzesinski will complete the heptathlon on Friday with the 60-meter hurdles, pole vault and 1,000-meter run.

Two of four other qualified Dickinson State athletes will start their nationals performance on Friday, as well.

Sophomore sprinter Megan Erickson will partake in the 60-meter dash preliminaries. Erickson, a Dickinson High graduate, is ranked 35th of 46 racers.

Senior Cain Boschee will run the same event on the men's side of the competition. He is ranked 26th of 31 contestants.
