CALDWELL, Idaho - The Dickinson State baseball team didn’t show any signs of life in its opening doubleheader with College of Idaho.
The Yotes played two well-rounded games en route to 9-0 and 6-0 shutouts over DSU on Friday at Wolfe Field.
Neither team scored in the first three innings of game one. Idaho struck first in the bottom of the fourth on a Matt Hamilton RBI single and RBI triple by third baseman Jake Hennessy. Hennessy was 3 for 4 with two RBI.
Idaho scored its nine runs over four consecutive innings. It was highlighted by right fielder Chase Miller and Hamilton, who both went 2 for 3 with two runs. Lee Johnson-Harris, Mitch Viydo, Troy Carr, Cole Mansanerez and Brady Mooney scored the other five runs for the Yotes.
DSU’s lone hit came from catcher Ryan Risse, who singled to the shortstop in the top of the ninth inning.
Idaho pitcher Kyle Garvin threw the complete-game win, while DSU starter Tony Roberts was credited with the loss. The DSU junior allowed six earned runs on nine hits, walked three batters and struck out three in five innings.
DSU’s bats were a little more active in game two, but it didn’t get any easier. Idaho started the scoring off in the bottom of the first with two runs on two hits by Carr and Hamilton, who hit a RBI double to center.
Hennessy scored two runs for the Yotes during the fourth and fifth innings. Seth Champlin went 2 for 3 with a RBI triple and scored a run while Viydo, Jordan Grubbs and Mooney each finished with a RBI and run of their own.
DSU’s five came from different batters. The team also committed no fielding errors. Josh Schuller got the start and the loss for the Blue Hawks with six runs on eight hits over five innings of work.
